We rented a
cottage in the Wicklow Mountains, in the middle of nowhere (yet so close to
everything: mountains (obviously), forests, the sea, and Tesco). We had a kitchen,
a fireplace, a very nice host with two adorable dogs, and an incredible view on
the mountains. February is still quite cold for hiking and visiting, but we made do with warm clothes and shoes.
We visited Glendalough,
went hiking in the mountains where we saw deer living their life, almost died
because we climbed up too high and all the paths were frozen, got home anyway,
and spent our evenings cooking food (and potato waffles. I freaking love potato
waffles but they don’t have them in France! I'm so sad about that) and trying to get warm in front of
the fire place.
On another day, we
decided to drive across Ireland to see the Cliffs of Moher and do a road trip
in the Burren, which is a region in Ireland that has amazing landscapes (yes, that’s totally feasible in a day. Ireland isn’t that big).
One of the most
amazing (but terrifying) experiences was driving down the old military road in
Wicklow and seeing the “Vikings” location of Kattegat. We decided to risk the
drive although it was cold and the road supposedly closed – but we thought: “it’s
not like we’re going all the way to the top of the mountains, we’ll be fine”.
Well, that’s exactly what we did. And we weren’t fine. Luckily, Matt is a
really good driver who managed to get us out of multiple situations where the
car was sliding and couldn’t go up the hill. And once we knew that we would
make it out alive, the amazing scenery was so worth it!
We had a really good
time in Dublin as well, however I somehow didn’t take any pictures…But I can’t
wait to go back!
